HIGH-LEVEL EVENT ON:
FOLLOW-UP AND REVIEW OF THE POST-2015 DEVELOPMENT AGENDA
AT THE GLOBAL LAND TOOL NETWORK’S (GLTN) 6TH PARTNERS MEETING

The Outcome Document of the UN Summit adopted in September of this year recognizes the role of land and soil resources for sustainable development and calls for a follow-up and review of the agenda that is “participatory”, “inclusive” and that “respects the integrated and indivisible character of the set of goals”. Such an approach would support an effective review of cross-cutting issues such as land and soil resources as they are intrinsically linked to achieving food and energy security, sustainable agriculture and the supply of raw materials for other purposes. Open questions related to the follow-up and review of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) include, how should the follow-up and review of the new agenda be organized at national level through such an integrative approach that is participatory and inclusive? And who should be involved, how, and at what stage of the process?
Coinciding with the beginning of the implementation of the SDGs, this high-level event will aim to look forward into the future by addressing the necessary requirements for an effective follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for land and natural resources. In particular, the event will address the potential role the Global Land Tool Network and its partners can play in this regard. The GLTN -as an alliance of global, regional and national partners working on issues of poverty alleviation through land reform, improved land management and security of tenure- could play a role assisting national governments to conduct follow-up and review of soil and land-related SDGs. The event will explore this potential role. In an effort to increase the participatory nature of this otherwise by invitation only event, we invite the public to submit questions via twitter (@IASS_potsdam #2030agenda) to be posed during the interactive panel discussion.
The GLTN and its partners, including the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, have actively engaged in efforts to ensure land and soil resources are recognized as underpinning several of the SDGs, but the implementation, follow-up and review phase beginning in 2015 will require a different approach to engage with stakeholders at the global, regional and national level. At this event, representatives from governments, the UN system, civil society and academia will discuss and find common strategies for engagement in the runup to the next High-Level Political Forum in 2016, the 71st UN General Assembly and beyond.

The event will address the questions:
- What has been decided at the global level in terms of how the follow-up and review of the Post-2015 Agenda will be carried out?
- What are necessary requirements for an effective follow-up and review of land resources at the national level?
- What is the potential contribution by the GLTN and partners to the follow-up and review of land resources?
The outcomes of the discussions will feed into an IASS Policy Brief on recommendations for an integrated and inclusive follow-up and review of natural resources. The event is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).
